Formation of Linguistic States in India After Independence

Formation of Linguistic States

After the partition of the country, 552 odd states and the following 9 provinces, some complete some partial remained with India:

1. East Punjab
2. United Province
3. Central Province
4. West Bengal
5. Bihar
6. Orissa
7. Assam (minus the district of Sylchar)
8. Bombay
9. Madras

But such a division was not based on linguistic homogeneity, geographical factors, and cultural connections, so there was a demand in different parts of the country to reorganize the states on a linguistic basis. Consequently from to time, various States Reorganization Commissions were appointed to reorganize the states on some scientific basis.

As a result of this, many old states vanished and new states emerged. As a result of accommodating all such diversities and aspirations, states continued to grow in number. Now there are 28 States and 7 Union Territories in the Indian Union. Experience has shown that the formation of linguistic states has made the country more united and the administration move easier and successful.
