National Constitution Day: Significance, History, and Facts



Constitution Day also known as Samvidhan Divas, is observed in the country on the 26th of November each year to mark adopting the Constitution of India. On the 26th of November 1949, India's Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India, which was in effect from the 26th of January 1950.

 

In 2015 The Union ministry of social justice announced the decision of the Centre to mark the 26th of November in the year of Constitution Day to promote constitutional values among the citizens according to the official website.

 

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was the very first minister of law in India under the control of Congress Centre who was appointed the constitution's chairman committee to draft it in 1947. The committee was tasked with creating the nation's constitution.

 

American scholar Granville Seward Austin has described the Constitution written by Ambedkar as "first and foremost an instrument of socialization.

 

Why 26 November is celebrated by the government as Constitution Day?

 

The Union Cabinet announced in May 2015 that Constitution Day will be marked on the 26th of November in order to spread the Constitutional principles among the countrymen.

 

The meaning to the moment:

 

In 2015 Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the observance on November 26 to be Constitution Day. The announcement was announced as part of the celebrations throughout the year of the 125th anniversary of the birth of the late Dr. B R Ambedkar.�The aim of the day is to raise attention to the significance of India's Indian Constitution as well as its principal architect Dr. B R Ambedkar.�Also, it is a day of respect to The late Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar the very first lawyer-in-chief of India who played a crucial part in the creation of the Indian Constitution.

 

Here are some crucial facts we should be aware of about the Constitution:

 

1. The Constitution of India was drafted between December 1946 and December 1949. This was the most difficult time. It was a time when religious riots, wars of the caste, and a deep-seated gender gap threatened society.

 

2. Constitution of India lays down the legal framework that defines the fundamental political principles, outlines the structures, procedures as well as the powers and duties of the government and spells the fundamental rights, guidelines principles, and duties of citizens.

 

3. The Constitution was written in The Constituent Assembly, which was chosen by the elected provincial assemblies. The 389-member Constituent Assembly took two years 11 months and 17 days to finish its historic mission of drafting the Constitution for an Independent India. In this time it held 11 sessions, totaling more than 165 days. Of this, 114 of them were devoted to the study of Draft Constitution. On the 29th of August 1947, the Constituent Assembly set up a Drafting Committee under the Chairmanship of Dr. B R Ambedkar to create the Draft Constitution for India.

 

4. It wasn't printed nor typed. It was written and calligraphed in both Hindi as well as English.

 

5. In the years since when the Indian Constitution came into the act, women in India were granted the right to vote.

 

6. It's also known as a "bag of borrowings" because it has borrowed many ideas from different countries.
