What is a Political Party?
A political party is a group of people who aim to control the government and carry out their general policies. On the basis of the number of parties in the political system, there can be a uni-party system, two-party system, or multi-party system in the country.
Political Party: Types
Classification of Party Systems on the Basis of the Number of Parties in the Political System.
Uni-party System
In the uni-party system, there is only one party in the political system. There is no competition in the system and people have no choice in the elections. Here, the people are not allowed to go against the government -and form their own new parties. In the two-party system, there are two major parties in the system. There can be smaller parties also but they have little or no influence in the political sphere.
Multi-Party System
In the multi-party system, there are three or more parties in the political system. Every party is strong to win the elections and form the government. Sometimes no party gets a clear majority then several parties join together to form the government.
Why is One Party not Good for Democracy?
In a uni-party system, there is only one party in the political system. People are not allowed to criticize the governments and form their own new parties. Voters do not have any option at the time of election. They can either say yes or no vote at all for the party. However, this system is against democracy which allows everybody to express his opinion. The uni-party system is like a dictatorship where people have to follow all the policies of the government.
People do not enjoy full rights and freedom. They are not allowed the freedom of thought and expression and the freedom to criticize the government policies. Offering a Meaningful Choice of Political Parties to the Voters. The existence of two or more parties in the political system gives voters the options in elections. They can choose the party that they like and vote for it. Various parties talk about their policies with the general public. They discuss the programs that they will follow for certain issues.
They aim to show that the policies of their party are better than others' policies. But these days, the parties more or less agree on the different problems facing the country. They are also, more or less, similar in their ideologies. They differ only on the preferences and priorities about such issues. This does not give the voters an any good choice in the elections.
There is no clear-cut difference between the parties contesting elections. Sometimes people cannot even elect different leaders, since they keep changing their parties.
