What is Inland Sea? Examples - Capian Sea, Red Sea, Dead Sea and Aral Sea

Inland Sea

An inland sea (also known as an epeiric sea or an epicontinental sea) is a shallow sea that covers central areas of continents during periods of high sea level that result in marine transgressions.

In the module we will learn about Inland Seas :-

Caspian Sea :-

The Caspian sea is the largest enclosed body of water on Earth by area, variously classed as the worlds largest lake or a full-fledged sea. It is an enhorheic body of water and lies between the southern areas of the Russian Federation and northern Iran. The Volga and the Ural River discharging into the Caspian sea.

The Red Sea :-

The red Sea is a sea water inlet of the Indian Ocean lying between Africa and Asia; it is entirely made of salt water. No natural rivers infuse it with fresh water, making it one of the most saline bodies of water in the world. It was named for the changing color of its water. Normally, the water is blue-green. Sometimes, though, red algae turn the water reddish brown.

The Red sea is long and narrow. The Suez canal connects the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. The Red sea is one of the busiest trade routes. Ships carry passengers and goods between Europe and Asia through the Suez canal. The sea also contains deposits of oil and other minerals.

The Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is not a sea but a saltwater lake. The Dead Sea is the second saltiest water body in the world with a salt content of 33% as compared to 2 to 3% of the other seas around the world.

Aral Sea -

Once the fourth largest body of inland water in the world, the Aral sea is a saltwater lake located in the heart of Central Asia, roughly 200 miles ( 320 km ) east of the Caspian Sea.

A quarter of a century ago, the Aral sea was a big joke. However, as irrigation needs have forced farmers to drain more and more water from the rivers feeding the Aral, its volume has decreased by more than two-thirds in the last 25 years. Where fish once swam, camels now wander over the floor of the sea. If present trends continue the Aral sea will cease to exist.
