Better Housekeeping Practices To Avoid Wastewater: Class 7 - Studynlearn

We have seen when sewer lines get chocked the wastewater overflows to the road. Sometimes foul-smelling filthy water finds its way to some houses. Such free-flowing drain water poses huge health hazards besides causing air and water pollution. In this blog, we will learn better housekeeping practices to avoid wastewater.

Better housekeeping practices to avoid wastewater

1. See what you are putting down the drain

A clogged-up drain pipe sounds terrible. The sight of an open drain is disgusting. Some common items that block the drainpipe are- tissue papers thrown down the toilet bowl, oils, fats, waste food, dust, hair, rubber bands, etc.

One of the ways to minimize or eliminate waste and pollutants at their sources is to see what you are putting down the drain.

2. Food

Things that should not be put down in the sink include butter, grease, fruit, vegetable peelings, citrus skin, banana peels, and tea bags. These can block your drain pipes.

Bread, butter and fried items made of fine flour are not good for your pipes, they form a mixture that sticks inside pipes. Cooking oil and fats can harden and block the pipe.

3. Grease

Grease should not be thrown down the drains. Grease will stick in your drains and form a very hard plug.

4. Chemicals

You should never pour paints, solvents, insecticides, motor oil, medicines, and pesticides down your drain. These can congeal when mixed with dust and water and can block the drains. Moreover, these items may kill microbes that consume human and food wastes.

Used tea leaves, food remains, cotton, sanitary towels, soft toys, sponge, fabric, string pieces, bottle caps, cigarette butts, screws, and nails should never go down the drains. These wastes choke the drains and block the free flow of oxygen needed for aerobic bacteria to grow. This hampers the degradation process.

Other than learning better housekeeping practices, we should also ensure sanitation in public places.

Sanitation in public places

In our country fairs are organized periodically. A large number of people participate in them. In the same way railway stations, bus depots, airports, and hospitals are very busy places. Thousands of people visit them daily.

A large amount of waste is generated here. It must be disposed of properly otherwise, epidemics could break out. The government has laid down certain standards of sanitation but, unfortunately, they are not strictly enforced. However, all of us can contribute to maintaining sanitation in public places.

We should not scatter litter anywhere. If there is no dustbin insight, we should carry the litter home and throw it in the dustbin.
