The President: Eligibility, Election, Term, Salary and allowances



The President, who is elected Head of the State, heads the executive body of the Indian Union. This person issues orders to enforce laws made by the Parliament. The Vice-President, the Prime Ministers, the Council of ministers, the officials, and experts of the civil services assist and advice the President in his work.

 

Eligibility

 

In our country, for a person to be eligible for the post of the President one must be
� a citizen of India,
� least thirty-five years of age,
� qualifies to be a member of the Lok Sabha,
� person also should not hold any office of profit under Central, State, or Local Governments.
Neither can he or she be a member of the Parliament or a State Legislature.

 

Election

 

An electoral college elects the President of India. It consists of:
� the elected members of both the Houses of Parliament,
� the elected members of State Legislative Assemblies,
� the elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of the Union Territories of Delhi and Pondicherry.
A President is eligible for re-election to the office after completing the term in office.

 

Term

 

The President�s term of office is five years from the date on which he assumes office. His term may come to an end earlier (i) by resignation in writing addressed to the Vice-President of India or (ii) by removal for violation of the Constitution by the process of impeachment.

 

Functions

 

� To deliver an opening address to both Houses,
� A bill passed by the House of Parliament cannot become law without the President�s assent,
� To make ordinances while both Houses are not in session, etc. all these functions make him a part of the Legislature.

 

Salary and allowances

 

The President draws a salary of Rs 50,000 per month and is entitled to other allowances as permissible by law in force from time to time.
