Battle of Buxar: Causes and Result Of Battle With MCQs - Class 8

Do you know, the Battle of Buxar was fought between whom? The battle was fought between Mir Qasim, Shah Alam, and Shuja-Ud-Daulah on one side and the British on the other side. The three forces met the British forces at Bauxar on 22 October 1764. This battle is known as the Battle of Buxar.

After the Battle of Plassey, Mir Jafar became the new Nawab of Bengal and the East India Company became a political force to reckon with in Bengal.

Mir Jafar failed to meet the monetary demands of the company and was forced to abdicate in favor of his son-in-law, Mir Qasim. Mir Qasim granted the company the Zamindari of the districts of Burdwan, Midnapore, Chittagong.

Causes of the Battle of Buxar:

Do you know what were the causes of this battle?

Mir Qasim was a very clever, strong, and efficient ruler, but he was anxious to consolidate his power. For this purpose, he started to train his army on western lines. He established a factory for the manufacture of guns and took various steps to improve his financial position. All these measures were seen by the East India Company as a threat to their power.

To prove an equal opportunity to his traders, the Nawab decided to abolish customs duties on internal trade. This annoyed the East India Company. He also dismissed all the officials who were close to the company.

Result of the Battle of Buxar:

The three allies clashed with the company's army and were completely defeated. Mir Qasim ran away after the defeat and never came back and the rest two signed the Treaty of Allahabad with the English Viceroy, Lord Clive in 1765.

● Under this treaty, the company got the rights to collect the Diwani (i.e., revenue) from Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa.
● The Nawab of Awadh paid? 30 lakhs to the company to retain his Nawabship.
● On the company's instance, he also agreed to give the areas of Allahabad and Kora to the Shah Alam.
● The Nawab of Awadh became dependent upon the company. The company promised to pay a pension of ?26 lakhs a year to the Mughal emperor.

Dual Government:

What was the dual government?

After getting the Diwani rights in Bihar, Bengal, and Orissa, Lord Clive established a dual system of government in Bengal in 1765. Under it, the same person acted as Deputy Diwan on behalf of the company and Deputy Subedar on behalf of the Nawab.

In this system, the English had power but no responsibilities while the Nawab had the responsibility but no power. Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa suffered badly and were drained of their wealth under the dual system.

The company appointed two Deputy Governors, Mohammed Raza Khan, and Shitab Roy to carry out the task of administration. Thus, the real power passed into the hands of the company but the dual system served to hide this fact.
