Sugar Act 1764: American Revenue Act - American War of Independence

The Sugar Act was passed by parliament on 5 April 1764, and it arrived in the colonies at a time of economic depression. The Act banned the import of molasses from overseas countries except England. Taxes were imposed on wine, silk, coffee and other articles.

 

The Sugar Act 1764, also known as the American Revenue Act 1764. It was a revenue-raising act passed by the Parliament of Great Britain on 5 April 1764. Before the American Revenue Act, Great Britain has the Molasses Act of 1733 to help the British sugar plantation in the West Indies.

 

The Molasses obtained from other places (French, Dutch) was a lot cheaper than sugar from the British West Indies. This act imposed a tax on molasses bought from non-British lands. This act was set to expire in 1763 but the British government thought that the demand for sugar would only increase.

 

The American Revenue Act aimed to take advantage of the demand for sugar and was seen as an easy way to raise the money through tax. The American Revenue Act 1764 was put in place to raise revenue, as the British government was heavily in debt after the French and Indian War.

 

The new American Revenue Act of 1764 halved the previous tax on molasses and banned the import of molasses from overseas countries except England.
