Municipal Election - Urban Administration - Class 6 Notes

In a municipal corporation, the members are elected on the basis of adult franchise for a term of five years. The city is divided into different wards for the purpose of election. The members thus elected are known as ward councilors. Some of the seats are reserved for the Scheduled castes, Scheduled tribes, and these Backward classes. One-third of the seats are reserved for women.

 

The head of the municipal corporation is called the mayor. He is elected by the members. A deputy mayor is appointed who discharges the duty of mayor in his absence. Both these officials are appointed for a term varying between one to two and a half years in different municipal corporations.

 

Similarly in the municipalities, a chairman and a deputy chairman are elected. The activities of the municipal corporation are conducted through different committees. Every municipal corporation has a standing committee. All the policy decisions of the municipal corporation are made by this committee.

 

Several separate committees are set up like water supply, health, transport, garbage collection, etc, that decide on the work to be done in the city. The corporation also sets upward committees consisting of representatives from two or more wards.
