Ramkrishna Paramhansa was a priest and saint and was also a socio-religious reformer. His holy life, simplicity and wisdom inspired all those who gathered around him. He believed that service to humanity was the best form of worship. His famous disciple was Narendra Nath Dutta, known as Swami Vivekananda.

He was a great disciple of Ramakrishna Paramhansa. He had faith in the superiority of Indian philosophy and spirituality. He wanted to be fearless and self-reliant. He represented Hinduism at the World Parliament of Religions held at Chicago in 1893.
Vivekananda organized the disciples of Ramakrishna and founded the Ramakrishna Mission in 1897.
The aims of the Mission are �

- To cultivate the spirit of liberty, equality and free-thinking
- To preach unity and oneness of all religions
- Service to mankind was service to God
He condemned the caste system and emphasis on rituals and superstitions. His teachings gave to the people of India the self-confidence they needed against the superiority of western civilization.
