Transformation of a Simple to Complex Sentences
A simple sentence can be converted into a complex sentence by expanding a word or phrase into a subordinate clause - which can be a noun clause, an adjective clause or an adverb clause.
In this blog we will learn how to transform simple to complex sentences.
1. Let us take some examples to understand:
He liked my suggestion.
This is a Simple sentence
Its corresponding Complex sentence will be
He liked what I suggested.
Note, here we have expanded the phrase �my suggestion� into a subordinate clause �what I suggested�, which is a noun clause.
2. Let us take another example
His advice did not prove successful.
This is a Simple sentence
Its corresponding Complex sentence will be
What he advised did not prove successful.
Note, here we have expanded the phrase �his advise� into a subordinate clause �what he advised�, which is a noun clause. It is important to note that it is usually a noun or a noun equivalent that can be changed into a noun clause
For example in the above sentences, the noun equivalent � his advise� and �my suggestion� has been changed to noun clauses what he advised and what I suggested.
3. Let us see some more examples
1. There I saw a beautiful girl.
This is a Simple sentence
Its corresponding Complex sentence will be
There I saw a girl who was beautiful.
Note, here we have expanded the phrase �beautiful girl� into a subordinate clause �who was beautiful�, which is an adjective clause.
2. A wounded tiger is very fierce.
This is a Simple sentence
Its corresponding Complex sentence will be
A tiger that is wounded is very fierce.
Note, here we have expanded the phrase �wounded tiger� into clause �A tiger that is wounded�, which is an adjective clause. You can notice that it is adjectives or adjective equivalents or appositional words or phrases that are generally converted into adjective clauses.
4. Let us see some more examples
On being challenged they ran away.
This is a Simple sentence
Its corresponding Complex sentence will be
When they were challenged they ran away.
Note, here we have converted adverb phrase �on being challenged� to adverb clause �whey they were challenged.�
